I was told that babies under 6 months should not get fluoride (ie in drinking water) - now my pediatrician told me that my 9 month old SHOULD be drinking fluoridated water. I go online to find out conflicting information on whether or not; and that the KIND of fluoride in 90% of metropolitan cities (silicafluorides) is not good because it can cause higher lead uptake in children. The original studies that found fluoride a positive asset to dental health were based on sodium fluoride, a more expensive and now rarely used chemical.
Anyone heard or know something good about this?

Re: Fluoride and Water sources
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 8:24 AMFluoride is neither a nutrient nor required for healthy teeth AND fluoride is in virtually all foods and beverages. No child has ever been fluoride deficient. And fluoride deficiency is not linked with more tooth decay. So there need not be any fear that children aren't getting "enough" fluoride.
Actually, in the U.S, children are fluoride overdosed and up to 41% sport dental fluorosis - white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth.
As a result the American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control says that concentrated infant formula should not be mixed with fluoridated water because many studies over many years have shown that children who drink fluoride via their infant formula have more dental fluorosis without benefit of less tooth decay because fluoride's beneficial effects are topical - when the fluoride hits the outside of the tooth. Fluoride's adverse effects occur upon ingestion.
The Food and Drug Administration ruled that fluoridated bottled water should not be marketed towards infants.
The American Dental Association reports that children up to the age of six risk dental fluorosis when they are given fluoride supplements.
Further, the Food and Drug Administration never tested fluoride supplements for safety or efficicay because sodium fluoride was on the market before 1938 when laws were enacted to require drug testing. However, sodium fluoride was on the market only as a rat poison and never was used for cavity prevention until after water fluoridation began in the 1940's.

Re: Fluoride and Water sources
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 8:57 AMMy son's pedi just told me to give my son flouride drops, and thanks for those links since I did not save any and its good info to have. I also spoke to other health care people and all said no to flouride. There was this study done in Canada (sorry, I don't remember the cities) where one city had flouride in their water and the other did not. The city with no flouride had healtheir teeth- the flouride was causing spots and "holes" in people's teeth in the other city!
