Please, make the whining stop!

My son is 4 and the whining is getting worse! Even when we ask him to put his shoes on to go to the park, play date, other fun places, he breaks down into this "I need help, I can't do it, I don't want to). I feel that if we take disciplinary action, we may be missing an emotional aspect. I seems to happen when he's well rested, just fed too. If anything, just tell me I am not the only one.

Austin Pagan Parent Alliance

Hi, I'm Jo and I am relocating permanently to Austin in a very few weeks. In my search for family-friendly pagan groups I found a lot of interest in starting such groups but nothing that seemed to be really family oriented. So I decided to start a tribe and see where it can go. If you are interested, please let me know. I thought this would be a great way to meet other pagan families and make new friends while contributing to our community. Feel free to spread the word and share any ideas you might have.
http://tribes.tribe.net/apfa
If there is enough interest on Tribe we can start a regular meetup on meetup.com.

Thanks and Blessed Be!

WEANING

I weaned my 5 year old when he was 15 months old. He has a TERRIBLE oral fixation, like everything goes into his mouth. Marbles, legos, you name it. Dangerous, scary and upsetting to think I messed him up when I weaned him. so now I have another little one and I'm trying to get input, I know I'm supposed to use my intuition, but I thought I'd ask around and see if maybe there's a method, or a time, that is more commonly appropriate.

Time for Self Love?

Hola Lovely Mamas (and Papas too).

For the last year I have been teaching this wonderful class on Self Love. Originally it was something I had intended for mothers in particular because as a mother myself, I found that Self Love has been a key component to staying healthy, whole and sometimes just staying sane. If I start to slide on taking care of myself, then my parenting starts to slide too. And although the class participants now include people from all walks of life, I have realized recently that I really enjoy working with and still feel very called to reach out to other parents. So hopefully some of you who live here in Los Angeles will feel called to join in and take part of what could be my last class here ( I am mostly likely moving to Portland at the end of summer and will be teaching there).

Here is the information:

LIVING LIFE FROM CENTER

The intention of this class is to bring centering and healing into your life through the radical act of SELF LOVE. Often we go through our lives without fully realizing how often we are living through the lens of Self Hate. We are so used to depreciating our own value that we don't even see that we are doing it. And when we slide into Self Hate, we often slide into situations in our lives that cause further chaos and perpetuate the feelings of loneliness, abandonment, desperation, being scared or being less than the perfect people we would like to be. Through bringing SELF LOVE into your life you can begin to see another path. A path that is aligned with feeling joy, completeness, trust, support and appreciation, in short feeling like you are in Love with life and with yourself.

This is a 12 week class where we will use reading, journaling, guided meditation, drawing, discussion, self expression, movement and sounding to uncover the person inside of us who truly is Lovable and worthy of Love.

Details:

Monday nights from 7 - 10 pm for 12 weeks beginning on June 2nd.

Price: email me or call me to discuss.

It is my great honor and joy to be on this path in myself and to be able to hold space for others on their own personal journey of Self Love.

May the road ahead of you be filled with Ecstatic Fulfillment.

Advice on super-aggressive 2 1/2 year old

Hi all!! A good friend of mine has a 2 1/2 year old boy who has recently become extremely aggressive around his mommy and also other kids. At the park, he has a tendency to hit other kids, even with toys. The only child he doesn't hit is my 3 1/2 year old daughter...I'm not sure why....Mommy is at her whits end and not sure what to do. She tries time-out, but he won't stay in it. Taking away toys? He isn't interested. The only thing that makes sense to me is that he won't nap. I know if my daughter misses her nap she becomes the "evil one." I've tried to tell my friend how important it is for her very energetic son to at least have an hour of quiet time in his room...but he just will not to it. Matter of fact, she has asked me to do some research for her as she can't leave him alone for 2 seconds for fear of destruction in her house. WOW!!! Any advice ladies?? Thanks in advance...

Conclave Journal Seeks Submissions

Hi Hip Mamas!

Have a story to tell? A poem to share? An essay you're proud of?

Conclave: A Journal of Character is accepting submissions for its inaugural issue, Fall 2008.
We will accept submissions from April 1-July 1, 2008.
www.conclavejournal.com

Conclave is an annual print journal that focuses on character-driven writing in short stories, flash fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and prose poems; we also print black and white photographs, and excerpts from plays: monologues, scenes, single acts, or one-act plays.

Conclave seeks writing that centers around well-crafted characters—complex and authentic: like Leopold Bloom, Huckleberry Finn, Anna Karenina, Hamlet, Miss Havisham, Hannibal Lecter, Hester Prynne, and others. Whether you love them or hate them, these characters are unforgettable and infuse their stories with life beyond the page. Those are the kinds of enduring characters we'd like to have populate the artfully crafted stories in Conclave.

For more information, see submission guidelines on our Web site.

Thank you.

help with 12 yr old daughter

i'm not sure what to do with my 12 yr old. she looks about 14 and has done several things that really worry me. the first was that i found out she was doing some light cutting (for 2 months on and off). we cried and talked and it appears that she has stopped this. but there are other things...today, i took away use of her phone because she was rude to me and i looked through it. i saw that she had recently begun communicating with a boy (around 14 i think) and they exchanged photos of their top halves (she had a bra on, he had no shirt). i'm worried about her and wondering what steps to take. it's especially difficult because i've been a single parent since she was 3 and she's had no one really take the place of her father. so i know she is looking for male attention and really wants to dress seductively, as well as wear dark eye makeup (which i stop). i've explained the safety issues of trying to look older and sexier, as well as what others will think of her. she just doesn't care. i will (and have) take away her cell phone and computer ("her life") but want her to have it if she's out in the world or if i'm gone. also i don't want her to freak out and really rebel - i know there are many other worse things she could be doing now...
what can i do?

Hi. I'm looking for a good pediatrician in the Napa region. We have Kaiser but are ready to change health plans if it gets us a good doc. I'm hoping for someone who knows @ "alternative" approaches to parenting; i.e. breastfeeding, cosleeping, vegetarian mama, not getting every immunization but picking and choosing. Any ideas? Thanks.

I am having a problem getting my daughter's school to allow her to attend on account of her not being vaccinated. It was my understanding that a letter stating religious reasons was sufficient as well as the only legal reason to not vaccinate. The school is now requesting a letter from a religious institution. Any suggestions? Similar experiences?

Diaper Bags?

What's your take on diaper bags?

I have been looking and looking and can't find one that I like... Or one that seems reasonably priced. And I am not really sure just how much actually ends up in the bag... Or if many pockets are the way to go, or one big pouch... And what about the changing pad? Is it really that useful? Or should I just use a larger padded blanket that can be washed?

So many questions... But I figure it will be something I carry for many years, so I should really be happy with it. (I'd rather spend a little more and only get one, than buy several cheaper ones that just fall apart or don't function efficiently.

And what about having them made? Are there people who do that?

Lol... I have been told that every woman finds her "thing" to obsess over... I think diaper bags must be mine...

Fluoride and Water sources

I was told that babies under 6 months should not get fluoride (ie in drinking water) - now my pediatrician told me that my 9 month old SHOULD be drinking fluoridated water. I go online to find out conflicting information on whether or not; and that the KIND of fluoride in 90% of metropolitan cities (silicafluorides) is not good because it can cause higher lead uptake in children. The original studies that found fluoride a positive asset to dental health were based on sodium fluoride, a more expensive and now rarely used chemical.

Anyone heard or know something good about this?

Hip Mama Writer selected as Semifinalist in Amazon Contest--Please vote/review!

I'm a Hip Mama who's also a writer (in the very little spare time I have with three kids under the age of 5!)

My novel manuscript, THE SILENCE OF TREES, has been selected as a Semifinalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. It's one of 836 excerpts chosen out of 5000 entries that were announced on January 15th.

The next stage of the competition asks Amazon customers to download, read, and review excerpts. Each review essentially counts as a vote, and the votes will be used in determining the top 100 Finalists, which will be announced on February 19.

This contest has been called the American Idol for Writers. Your review counts! So far, I'm in the lead but the other Semifinalists are quickly gaining.

If you have a few moments, please visit the site and read and review my 14-page excerpt from THE SILENCE OF TREES.

The link is:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011ZCAJC

Plus there are incentive prizes for reviewers!

For more information, you can also visit my website at www.thesilenceoftrees.com

I appreciate your review, as well as the reviews of anyone else you can forward this message on to.

Warm Regards,

By now I'm sure you've heard the star of the show (yet another of the Spears girls) has gotten her 15 year old self pregnant and is keeping the baby.

Now, I don't LOVE the show, but my son does watch it once in a while and the re-runs have still been playing.

My question is.........When someone as famous as this girl announces in the media she is pregnant and keeping the baby, how do you talk to your children about that? I mean, how do you feel?

It wasn't hard to handle (having a boy) and it was more confusion for him than anything else. He couldn't understand why "a kid" would want to be a mommy. We covered it from there. But I'm just interested in all your thoughts.

anyone make cloth menstrual pads here?

my daughter is a slender 9she doesn;t care for the word "skinny") tomboyish thirteen eyar old and by my estimation she;s about 6 months to a eyar from starting to cycle. (got small breast buds and some pubic hair now.)

if anyone here has a little cottage industry sewing cloth menstrual pads that would fit a slender, active young woman, and maybe a nice-looking pouch to go with, I;d rather buy them from you...let me know. I;m really busy with school and work right now and ym sewing maching is sort of a mess...I;d like to have them for her to take on her Outward Bound trip to Costa Rica by may. 9sje graduates 8th grade in june)...eve if she isn;t quite 'ready." she's very willing to use clothies but not interested in formal, even "alternative" ceremonies.

thanks!

How do you get your toddler to bed?

My daughter is 19 months old now and it's impossible to get her to sleep. Typically we just rock her and give her milk. She just wants to play, or simply stays awake for hours. I've been giving her motrin to help with teething pain. She's not crying. Just not sleeping. It's to the point where I have to hold her and let her get upset and then give her milk to get her to bed. It's really pushing me and I'm done with it. I have never done the cry it out thing, except for a couple times for a few minutes and she gets so scared she immediatley throws up. I need ideas. I'm so pissed off tonight I just have to put her down. Do you still rock your kids to sleep? I want her to begin putting herself to bed more. How to transition into this? I've tried lying down with her but she just plays.

I need to start the hunt for east bay pre-schools. We are in the middle of the relocation process - but I think we're shooting for Walnut Creek or that vicinity. Makena will turn 3 in March. A small class size without a lot of transition in teachers would be ideal - she takes a while to warm up to people and she's a little shy. She is amazing at picking up languages, so a bi-lingual, multi-lingual environment would be fantastic. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
thanks

Porn and kids - HELP!

I just checked the history of my 12 year old daughter's computer and found several porn sites she accessed a couple of days ago. I'm perplexed as to how to handle it. I'm certain it was her given the date and time of it in the history.

Some of the sites weren't exactly akin to the playboy of yester-year I satisfied my curiosity with. I wouldn't call it hardcore by today's internet standards but it wasn't just good ol' fashioned porn either. There was some anal sex including a girl being double penetrated, some teen stuff. I have no idea how she found it or if she has looked at this stuff before. For argument's sake, lets just assume it was the first time.

How do I handle it? Talk with her? Ignore it? Add parental controls? Is it just natural curiosity and I should let it be?

Hello, I've been here a while I'm just usually lurking in the shadows.

My son is begging me to carve a pumpkin but it's too early and it will rot before Halloween. I was thinking we could make some pumkins and other crafts to set out. Does anyone have any crafty ideas using stuff around the house and/or recycleables? Preferably things with little or no talent involved to make it. :)

Hi. I'm 35 weeks pregnant and taking lamaze classes. I'm not finding all the info I need to have an unmedicated birth and when I ask about alternatives to the drugs or the fetal monitor or whatever the teacher doesn't have a clue as to the answer (for example if the baby's heartbeat does slow what can I try before being induced or cut? Does breathing or certain motions or meditating have an effect before we move straight into something invasive?). Does anyone have any ideas about alternative type classes or what kind of person I could meet with one on one who isn't pushing the medical model? I will do whatever it takes of course to keep the baby safe but I'm not buying that drugs and scalpels are the answer to everything. I'm in Napa but will drive for info. Katz

Do any of you hip mamas have any advice on cosleeping? My fiance and I love to cosleep with our one month old daughter but I´m scared of rolling over on her, smothering her, etc.. I´ve heard that moms have a instinct that protects them from rolling over on their babies but one time shortly after she was born I fell into such a deep sleep that when her cries woke me up I was so disoriented I actually forgot I had a baby (!!!!) and was really confused for a brief second as to what was going on, so I can totally imagine being in a deep sleep and forgetting she is laying there with me/us.

The SKILLS act to get librarians in every school library

This is from author Meg Cabot's blog. I know it is short notice--the deadline is today !

++++++++++++++++++++

It’s not often something actually important comes across my desk (er…bed), but today something did: The single most important piece of legislation concerning school libraries comes before Congress in two weeks: Strengthening Kids’ Interest in Learning and Libraries, the SKILLs Act. We need everyone who cares about young people, literacy, literature, and libraries to contact their congressional legislator’s office in Washington and tell their representative, respectfully, that they support the SKILLs Act, and they want their legislator to support and cosponsor it, too.

The SKILLs Act will:

1.) Require every public school in every public school district in the country (elementary, middle, and secondary schools) to employ at least one state-certified school library media specialist per school no later than the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.

2.) Broaden the focus of training, professional development, and recruitment activities to include school library media specialists.

3.) Ensure that funds will serve elementary, middle, and high school students.

4.) Require books and materials to be appropriate for and engage the interest of students in all grade levels and students with special learning needs, including English language learners.

Scroll down for how you can help, or read on for more:

What this means is that all of our kids will not only have increased access to quality information and story, but will also have someone to teach them how to assess that information, so that they can become critical consumers of information. It means that kids of every color, from every background, will find the books they need in their own school libraries.

The enactment of the SKILLs Act also means that there will be more funds for book and educational purchases, giving young people more access to quality books chosen by knowledgeable professionals. Because the act increases purchasing dollars, it will give the discriminating book institutional market greater input on what is published for young people.

Due to traffic and public safety issues many children can no longer walk alone to their own neighborhood public libraries and are dependent on an adult taking them. Because many children of working parents have limited or no access to public libraries, school libraries managed by professionals are more important than ever.

In order for the SKILLs Act to be included in legislation this year that is, to place a state-certified school library media specialist in every school each member of the House must co-sponsor the SKILLS Act.

What can you do? It couldn’t be easier! Fax, phone, or email your congressional representative in support of the SKILLs Act by September 24, 2007 (that’s Monday, people).

To find contact information for your congressional representative by zip code go here: www.capwiz.com/ala/dbq/officials/?affliate_lookup=1.

If you click on the above link and input your zip code, it takes you directly to a place where you can email your representatives. You just have to put in your address. It’s SO EASY. I did it in literally two minutes. It was sooooo EASY!

To find detailed information about the SKILLs Act go: capwiz.com/ala/issues/alert/?alertid=10223941&PROCESS=Take+Action.

Car Seat Questions....

hi Hip Mamas. I am another hip mama in training.... :) (EDD 1.9.08)

I am starting down the road of researching my strollers and car seats. I am fairly certain I know which stroller I like, but the real question is the carseat. My focus is on an infant carseat, potentially a convertable. The Britax line is NOT my first choice (sister in law has used them with two children and hasn't been very happy)

What do you all find is the best?

Ease of using the 5 point harness?

Ease of installation and then security in car?

Ease of removing from the base and then carrying or placing in the stroller?

I am less concerned about color etc and more concerned about safety, baby comfort etc.

Thanks Hip Mamas!

Question About Calif. Schools and Alternatives

I'd like to hear from you hip, California Mamas out there; as I am considering moving to Calif. with two middle-school age children. Can anyone answer my questions below, knowledgably? I'd appreciate it. I'm looking into Santa Cruz, or Mendocino areas, especially. Thanks.

1-Does Calif. enforce mandatory school attendance laws? Or punish parents for child truancy?
2. Are home-schooling options available?
3 Are mandatory vaccinations required for public school attendance? Can one opt out?
4. Are there any good, alternative "hippie" schools around for middle-schoolers, that aren't expensive and over-priced?
5. Are there any free schools? Or Rasta schools?

THANKS in advance for your knowledge and help. I'm moving out of a fascist state (GA.) that is requiring mandatory vaccinations to attend public school. We are losing our freedom to opt out of this dangerous practice, which causes autism.

any advice? has anyone tried any "practice" sessions that work? they live in arizona, we're in cali. we basically won't get to practice at the place until the day of.

i'm wondering if anyone has tried anything beyond a pillow with my ring tied on it that works?

hey everyone,

i am dealing with a carpet beetle infestation in my bedroom (luckily has not spread to the rest of my house, fingers crossed). i figured out today that they found the macaroni art made by my children which i had stored in my bedroom closet. they built a nest around the macaroni art and have spread all over my room. i have had to vaccuum everything, wash all my bedding, etc, spray my whole room twice with insecticide and i realized today i probably need to clean all the clothes in my closet. sigh.

anyway--if you have macaroni art anywhere in your house you should get rid of it or make sure it is sealed up!

alert..gardasil vaccine deaths!

For Immediate Release
May 23, 2007 Contact: Press Office
202-646-5188

Judicial Watch Uncovers Three Deaths Relating to HPV Vaccine

Event Reports Obtained from FDA Detail 1,637 Adverse Reactions to Gardasil

(Washington, DC) -- Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released documents obtained from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, detailing 1,637 reports of adverse reactions to the vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV), Gardasil. Three deaths were related to the vaccine. One physician’s assistant reported that a female patient “died of a blood clot three hours after getting the Gardasil vaccine.” Two other reports, on girls 12 and 19, reported deaths relating to heart problems and/or blood clotting.

As of May 11, 2007, the 1,637 adverse vaccination reactions reported to the FDA via the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) included 371 serious reactions. Of the 42 women who received the vaccine while pregnant, 18 experienced side effects ranging from spontaneous abortion to fetal abnormities.

Side effects published by Merck & Co. warn the public about potential pain, fever, nausea, dizziness and itching after receiving the vaccine. Indeed, 77% of the adverse reactions reported are typical side effects to vaccinations. But other more serious side effects reported include paralysis, Bells Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and seizures.

“The FDA adverse event reports on the HPV vaccine read like a catalog of horrors,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “Any state or local government now beset by Merck’s lobbying campaigns to mandate this HPV vaccine for young girls ought to take a look at these adverse health reports. It looks as if an unproven vaccine with dangerous side effects is being pushed as a miracle drug.”

Judicial Watch filed its request on May 9, 2007, and received the adverse event reports from the FDA on May 15, 2007. Judicial Watch has posted the adverse event reports below.

(A recent study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also questioned the general effectiveness of Gardasil.)
CELL PHONE RADIATION
MAY BE KILLING BEES

Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame
for mysterious world wide 'colony collapse' of bees

By Geoffrey Lean and Harriet Shawcross
Published: 15 April 2007

It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail.
They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as well.
The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up.

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) occurs when a hive's inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers, like so many apian Mary Celestes. The vanished bees are never found, but thought to die singly far from home. The parasites, wildlife and other bees that normally raid the honey and pollen left behind when a colony dies, refuse to go anywhere near the abandoned hives.
The alarm was first sounded last autumn, but has now hit half of all American states. The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East Coast.

CCD has since spread to Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. And last week John Chapple, one of London's biggest bee-keepers, announced that 23 of his 40 hives have been abruptly abandoned.

Other apiarists have recorded losses in Scotland, Wales and north-west England, but the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs insisted: "There is absolutely no evidence of CCD in the UK."

The implications of the spread are alarming. Most of the world's crops depend on pollination by bees. Albert Einstein once said that if the bees disappeared, "man would have only four years of life left".
No one knows why it is happening. Theories involving mites, pesticides, global warming and GM crops have been proposed, but all have drawbacks.

German research has long shown that bees' behaviour changes near power lines.
Now a limited study at Landau University has found that bees refuse to return to their hives when mobile phones are placed nearby. Dr Jochen Kuhn, who carried it out, said this could provide a "hint" to a possible cause.

Dr George Carlo, who headed a massive study by the US government and mobile phone industry of hazards from mobiles in the Nineties, said: "I am convinced the possibility is real."
The case against handsets
Evidence of dangers to people from mobile phones is increasing. But proof is still lacking, largely because many of the biggest perils, such as cancer, take decades to show up.

Most research on cancer has so far proved inconclusive. But an official Finnish study found that people who used the phones for more than 10 years were 40 per cent more likely to get a brain tumour on the same side as they held the handset.

Equally alarming, blue-chip Swedish research revealed that radiation from mobile phones killed off brain cells, suggesting that today's teenagers could go senile in the prime of their lives.
Studies in India and the US have raised the possibility that men who use mobile phones heavily have reduced sperm counts. And, more prosaically, doctors have identified the condition of "text thumb", a form of RSI from constant texting.

Professor Sir William Stewart, who has headed two official inquiries, warned that children under eight should not use mobiles and made a series of safety recommendations, largely ignored by ministers.

Okay, so here's the deal.

I want to become a hip mama...I'm not pregnant yet, but my husband and I are going to start trying late summer, and I have some concerns.

My first concern is that I will, uh, basically cease to exist. That I will be enveloped plastic, electronic toys, prepackaged food, and my mother in laws best intentioned pink and blue mainstream christian pamperville world that I will lose myself, and what I believe.

I know I will change. I know life will be very different, and I'm okay with that.

What I'm not okay with is losing me. I know it might be vain to say, but, I think ME, the me that I am now, is one of the best things I can protect and gift to my child(ren).

So I'm coming to you, the Hip Mamas, and asking you, sincerely,
HOW did you, do you remain hip mamas despite all of the pressures, benign and otherwise, which push you in directions you wouldn't otherwise go?

I'd love to hear what kept you sane, what you did to make your priorities for the earth part of raising your child, how you said 'no thanks' to the well intentioned religious education found at every family function?

Thanks,
Amy

bees and calcium

Pollinator decline

It may be linked to calcium transport affected by acidic rain in the soil and the availability of heavy metal made available to plants that thrive on heavy metals and do not need a high amount of calcium to survive. Most invasives are nectar producers not pollen producers. Heavy metals are stored in nectar.
I. ATMOSPHERIC EFFECT ON SOIL AND PLANTS
Rain reacts with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which makes it slightly acidic, usually around pH 5.6.
The acidification is mainly caused by sulphur dioxide, which is a product of burning fossil fuels predominantly emitted from power stations. Also various oxides of nitrogen are emitted from the vehicle exhausts which react with water vapour and forms sulphuric acid and nitric acid.
The acid rain increases the acidity of soils in many areas.
•	The acid leaches out important minerals needed by plants for growth. For example calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
•	Toxic materials become mobilized, for example aluminum and lead
•	Decomposition in the soil is inhibited by acid.
•	Most invasive plants thrive on heavy metals and acidic soils
•	Many native plants need calcium as a vital nutrient
•	Native plants and pollenators can’t survive in calcium deficient soils
Red acid soils exhibit both low fertility and potential toxicity to native plants. An acid red soil lacking in soil organic matter can solubilize large amounts of metals, notably aluminum and manganese. When these metallic ions dominate the soil solution, they block the absorption and activity of essential nutrients such as calcium.
Soils are becoming more acid as a result of the removal of the cations calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium through leaching. As the cations are removed from the soil colloids, they are replaced with acid-forming hydrogen and aluminum

II. NATIVE PLANTS AND POLLINATORS
Calcium
•	acts as a regulator of balance of micro nutrients.
•	regulates non-essential trace elements.
•	prevents excess uptake of many of heavy metals
• keeps them from having adverse effects when their levels get high. (1)http://www.hmhgypsum.com/why.htm
In order for a pollen tube to grow it requires calcium ions and cell adhesion proteins
Butterflies and other pollinators need calcium or they won't seek out the females.

Pollinators

•	affected by heavy metals passed through nectar and pollen.
Some of the problems caused by acid rain are presented with emphasis on the effects on bees, especially in the Northeast. Trace minerals are being leached out of the soils and nectar that lacks calcium is being passed by when the bees forage. The first plants to show the effects will be the wild varieties of the legumes, such as clover. This leaves only plants on the extreme end of the acid scale such as the blueberry for bee forage. This leads to the side effect of the movement of calcium in nectar which will be restricted due to a lack of calcium. (2)http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/product.biblio.jsp?osti_id=6151818
It is shown that the nectar-plants of adult butterflies are much more sensitive to heavy metals than the nectar-plants of moths and other pollinating insects. It is hypothesized that the butterfly decline is a secondary effect of heavy metal stress on local plants, not resulting in a decrease in the number of host-plants, but in a selective pressure of pollutants on the plant vigour, subsequently affecting their pollinators (3)http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=16828457
Pollinators are at risk because they absorb heavy metals from the necter sources. As the soil becomes more acidic, metals become more soluble. As metals become soluble they can be more easily transported to surface and ground waters(4).http://www.deq.state.mi.us/documents/deq-swq-nps-sm.pdf
INVASIVE PLANT TOLERANCE
NNIPS THRIVE IN ACIDIC SOILS THAT HAVE BEEN LEACHED OF NUTRIENTS. NNIPS can fix nitrogen, THUSLY MAKING THE SOIL MORE ACIDIC. Native plants won’t survive. NNIPS ABILITY TO ABSORB HEAVY METALS THAT HAVE BEEN FREED UP DUE TO ACID RAIN POSES A MYRIAD OF PROBLEMS AS WELL>
•	Invasives that spread through vegetative growth thrive.
•	Invasive plants that require pollinators will not survive when pollinators are gone.
•	The problem is not the invasives, It is pollution, heavy metal and human caused soil disturbances

Crownvetch has growth characteristics that help it to succeed where other plants fail. It grows well on infertile, sandy, gravely-rocky, clay or shale soils that range in acidity from 5.5 to 7.0 and lack organic matter. These soil conditions are often encountered on highway embankments. (5)http://www.propertyrightsresearch.org/2004/articles/crownvetch.htm

Lespedeza cuneata will grow on strongly acidic to neutral soils. (6)http://www.invasivespecies.net/database/species/search.asp?sts=sss&st=sss&fr=1&sn=&rn=virginia&hci=-1&ei=-1&x=10&y=13

Multiflora rose is commonly found on marginal sites or poorly managed
agricultural lands and tolerates adverse site conditions [7,8,9]. It
is found with greater frequency on acidic soils, but will establish on
all soils except those that are poorly drained. It favors disturbed or
open sites and aggressively colonizes streambanks, field edges,
pastures, and reclaimed strip mines [8,9]. Multiflora rose is also
found on prairies and savannahs
(10)http://reference.allrefer.com/wildlife-plants-animals/plants/shrub/rosmul/all.html

Stiltgrass appears to prefer moist, acidic to neutral soils that are high in nitrogen
(11)http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/mivi1.htm

Conclusion

Soils are becoming more acid as a result of the removal of the cations calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium through leaching. As the cations are removed from the soil colloids, they are replaced with acid-forming hydrogen and aluminum.
•	Acid rain raises soil acidity
•	Prime nutrients are leached
•	Native calcium dependant ecosystems die off
•	Invasive tolerants move in increase nitrates in soil
•	Soil becomes more acidic and supportive of various NNIPS
•	Heavy metals become mobil in soil and plants
•	Remaining native fauna are poisoned and extripated
•	Most aggressive invasives create a monoculture stand

What can be done….save seed…Suppliment pollinators with feeders, that have nutrients required. Treat ground with same. Remove non-natives. Consistent stewardship. Petition to congress to regulate emissions on factories.

Why is information on the Virginia Tech massacre, being suppressed ?

Cho Seung-Hui is the 9th School Shooter Under Influence of Psychiatric Drugs — Documented to Cause Homicidal Ideation, Suicide, Psychosis, Mania and Hostility

The psycho/pharmaceutical industry and their minions are
shamelessly using the recent Virginia Tech shootings to push for more forced
drugging, more involuntary commitment, and more mental health "intervention"
. However, any rational person must ask why there has not been a federal
investigation into psychiatric drugs as they relate to school shootings.

In the aftermath of the Virginia Tech massacre, why has the major press
failed to ask why a thorough investigation has not been initiated to
determine the role, if any, psychotropic drugs--antidepressants in
particular--have played in most--if not all--school shooting massacres?
Will the press remain silent as Cho Seung-Hui's toxicology report is
concealed?

These drugs have been documented by the FDA to cause mania,
suicide, psychosis, worsening depression and even homicidal ideation .

If more than 1/2 the shooters were taking PCP or smoking Crack --
there would be an investigation, but those are illegal drugs and do not rake
in billions in profit for vested interests.

Why aren't these mental health "experts" asking what drugs Cho
Seung-Hui was taking after investigators found "depression medication" in
his belongings?

Hair dye **sigh**

My son, bless his little soul, has been begging me to dye his hair for over 2 years now. He sees my hair change all of the time, from red to black to pink to white, and I want to let him be free to express himself. My fabulous hair girl has given him a really cool new haircut kinda like Carey Hart with the shaggy, long bangs in the front and short in the back. She made a deal with him that if he washes his hair and conditions it at least 3X a week until his next trim, she will dye his hair for him.

HELP!!! I am OK with this, but does anyone know if hair dye is safe for a 7 year old?????

On a serious note

I'm not one to post all sorts of political stuff on boards but a House Resolution 333 has been proposed by Dennis Kucinich D-OH to impeach Vice President Cheney for 3 reasons.

1.) Knowingly bringing us into a war under false pretenses.
2.) Making unfounded connections between Sept 11 and Iraq.
3.) Trying to bring us into another war with Iran and violating our constitution and UN in doing so.

I tend to be very involved politically but don't usually ask friends to join in, but this time it is so important to send a message tot the people that represent us that holding the people to a higher standard the the elected officials is not ok. These people must be help accountable. If he is guilty then he will be impeached, if he is not then at least we will know that. I'm asking all of you to go to this site below and contact your represenative. http://www.house.gov/

I'm sure you get a lot of requests for such things but I have never felt it was more important to have our voice heard. Thank you for your time!

Hello ladies- I hope all is well.
Im having a hard time this year figuring out what to fill easter baskets with. Both of my girls know the "secret behind the bunny" so theres no question where the goodies come from... but Im almost clue less as to what to stuff the baskets with.

Before it would be jump ropes, bubbles, candy and bunny rabbits. They are 8 and 11 now- any suggestions?

(books, candy... (thats pretty much all I can think of)

With the arrival of spring, my family has spending a lot time enjoying the outdoors and teaching our daughter about nature. I read this article that has some nice and easy things to do with young kids to teach them about environment and conservation. Thought it'd be an interesting link to share with everyone.

I found this site and it has been an unending source of cool stuff to do with my son.

www.gocitykids.com

I have found so much to do here. If you live in or near a major city check it out. I found a dance studio that is $9-11 per class and they offer things like african dance class with live drumming, mommy and kid belly dancing, capoera for kids, creative movement, so much more. I also found a huge free indoor/ outdoor park for kids. It's amazing what' s out there.

They are: The Magical Rainbow Man and the Journey of Love and The Crystal Goddess. Both are very positive books that show children the amazing power of love, and they are both written by Shahastra. Try looking them up online and see what you think!

Potty training...

What works...?

I'm finding potty training to be a lot more difficult than I expected.

:::sigh:::

My little girl is 2. 8mos (3 years old at the end of June).
She is genuinely interested, and has been for some time.
My approach is to gently remind her to go potty.. repeatedly going thru all the motions - to have a routine.
We've had success in previous months, although lately she won't produce anything. Tells me "it's too hard".
(she waits to do it in her diaper/pull up instead).
I can sense she's feeling dissapointed and stressed about potty training.
The last thing I want is for this to be a terrible experience for her.
I don't want to push her, or traumatize her.
I feel so inexperienced in this!

Does anyone have any insight to share... positive or negative?
I could really use the support... so feel free to chime in on this discussion.
I'm sure I won't be the only parent who could benefit from some tried and true suggestions!

PS: We've been trying 'big grrrl panties' at home lately- she keeps dry for a while but accidents are frequent.
Havn't tried rewards except for rub on tattooes whenever there is a success. Stickers don't really motivate her.
Not sure how I feel about offering candy etc as a reward for going to the bathroom.

What's a mama to do???

Thanks in advance :)

that cosleeping thread got me thinking about a subject that's been on my mind. the first few times we had sex, we did it in our bed, while solomon slept. tht just freaked me out too much, afraid he'd wake up & see. i know he's young & wouldn't understand, but it still wierds me out. we've started having sex on the floor, next to the bed while the boy has a kingsize bed all to himself! is this a pretty common situation? where do y'all do the dirty deed?

SYNOPSIS

How are large drug companies benefiting from the latest trend of selling powerful psychoactive drugs to America's children? Do these drugs really help our children cure symptoms of supposed mental illness, or do they tend to increase depression, violence, and suicide? Are we really treating the root causes of mental illness, or are we just eliminating annoying symptoms?

This feature-length documentary examines the alarming growth in the prescription of powerful psychotropic drugs for adolescents and children. Leading experts, as well as Neil Bush, Michael Moore and Gary Null, provide insightful commentary about the growing trend to pathologize the behavior of children, and then require them to take mind-altering pharmaceutical drugs as a "cure." The documentary recounts the national tragedy of Columbine and focuses on the largely unknown fact that teenage shooter Eric Harris was on the psychotropic drug Luvox at the time he and Dylan Klebold took the lives of 13 other students at their high school. Violence and aggression, precipitated by prescribed drug use, is also explored in an unprecedented discussion between Mark Taylor, the first shooting victim in the Columbine tragedy, and Cory Baadsgard, a teenager on Paxil and Effexor who, in another violent incident, took his teacher and 23 students hostage at gunpoint in his Washington high school. The film proceeds to show the dangerous links between psychotropic drugs like Paxil, Luvox, Effexor and Prozac ñ commonly prescribed to adolescents for anxiety, depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - and the increased incidents of violence, suicide and psychotic behavior often observed in those children and adolescents who are taking the drugs. The film also provides compelling personal accounts, including a mother going to prison and losing her son to government authorities because she refused to give her son psychiatric drugs. Leading medical authorities and mental health professionals speak the unvarnished truth about current increased diagnoses of recently devised mental illnesses and the unprecedented prescription of a host of very powerful psychoactive drugs to "treat" them. Finally, this documentary explores safer, alternative methods for treating childhood mental illness. "

I found this article very interesting and wanted to share. (scroll down for the link) I was very confused at first - I wasn't sure if I'd read the title right... "5 reasons to STOP saying Good Job"!? And even through the beginning of the article I understood his points but didn't understand how to respond and interact in a positive way without using positive reinforcement? By the end, I was inspired and in agreement. Certainly good food for thought. I'd be interested in hearing any you'd like to share.

Just more praise for Alfie Kohn. Last fall he spoke at the school where I teach, and he had incredible things to say about how we teach (classes, yes, but also as parents). He was mainly there to discuss the issue of too much homework (his book, The Homework Myth, had just come out, I believe), but I found everything he said to be totally worth thinking about. Plus, everything he said about teaching could be applied to parenting... He was passionate, funny, and very genuine in his concern for the students we are sending out into the world. The kids at my school gave him a standing ovation (of course, THEY thought getting rid of most homework was a good idea... duh), but his presentation has been the root of some wonderful discussions among our faculty and admin this year.

Anyway, even though his ideas seem radical at first, he is all about helping kids to become curious, confident, thoughtful, responsible, and respectful human beings. Which I hope is where we're all headed...! :)

*I've posted this other places as well, but want to make sure all who are interested see it.

So, after hearing about this Ebay BULLSHIT of them now pulling all auctions for used cloth diapers, AND the myspace crap about pulling pics of breastfeeding mamma's off people's pages, i decided to call some pals over at KATU. I talked to the newsroom guy for a while and by the end of the conversation he completely understood where I was coming from and asked me if I would be willing to go on camera about this issue.

Hell yes i would.

So, if you're a CD mamma and you would like to join me, PM me with some info about you and if and when they call me back to do a story, I will have a little party at my house with all of you and we can tell our story!!

Thanks mamma's. We ARE doing the right thing, no matter what all the backward thinking assholes try to make you think. If you're not in the Portland area, CALL YOUR LOCAL NEWS STATION ANYWAY! Spread the word, it's easy. Whether you use CD or not, this is totally ridiculous... the sexualizing of used cloth diapers is NOT the same as "panty sniffing" (not that there's anything wrong with that :)
Older moms-to-be shouldn't worry

I can't think of an article that I've read recently that as thoroughly contradicts its title as this one does. Below the title, the author reports a list of reasons why women should be concerned about the "biological clock" that many "liberated" (read: wage enslaved) women have reason to hear ticking. Never mind that the study being described didn't begin to delve into the tickings of the emotional, psychological, ecological and economic clocks that would have given the subject more practical meaning. Instead, he's content to imply that closer reliance upon the implied wisdom of modern obstetrics should serve to soothe a host of significant physiological concerns.

Older moms-to-be shouldn't worry
By DR. JAMES J. COSGROVE
Posted Tuesday, January 30, 2007
http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070130/HEALTH/701300360/-1/NEWS01

The phrases "biological clock" and "advanced maternal age" are well known to women who, for one reason or another, delay childbirth till they're 35 or older. While these terms can create some anxiety for the expectant moms, there's growing evidence that proper preconception counseling and good prenatal care mean most older mothers can have a happy and healthy outcome to pregnancy.

Advanced maternal age is defined as the delivery of an infant on or after age 35. From 1990 to 2000 there was a 35 percent increase in the number of births to women 35 to 39 and a 70 percent increase among those 40 to 45.

Advanced age carries with it an increase in medical conditions that can have an adverse effect on pregnancy. The most common conditions include high blood pressure and diabetes. Preeclampsia, a complication of high blood pressure in pregnancy, increases by nearly 20 percent in women 35 or older. Both high blood pressure and diabetes should be under control prior to conception and carefully monitored throughout the pregnancy.

It also should be noted that fertility decreases with age. About 50 percent of women older than 40 who do not conceive within six months will have a fertility issue and should be evaluated by a fertility specialist. Most often, the reason can be diagnosed and treated, resulting in a pregnancy. Interestingly, even women older than 35 who do not need fertility treatments have a higher rate of twin pregnancies than their younger counterparts.

Perhaps the most well-known complication of childbearing in women older than 35 is the increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities, especially Trisomy 21 or Down syndrome. At 30, the risk of Trisomy 21 is 1 in 885 pregnancies. At 35, the risk is 1 in 365 and at 40 it is 1 in 109. Because of the high risk of chromosomal abnormalities, additional testing -- including amniocentesis, chronic villous sampling or a targeted ultrasound -- often is offered to expectant mothers of advanced age.

Amniocentesis involves removing some of the fluid that surrounds the baby in the uterus to study the chromosomes shed by the baby. It is usually done about 16 weeks into gestation. Chronic villous sampling is the removal of tissue from the placenta, again to study the chromosomes, by inserting a needle through the cervix. It is usually completed between 10 weeks and 12 weeks gestation. Rarely, a miscarriage may occur from these procedures and proper counseling is imperative.

Other complications for women of advanced maternal age include increased incidences of fibroids (benign growths of the uterine muscle) that ultimately may cause breech presentations, bleeding disorders from the placenta, premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall (abruption) and dysfunctional labor that can result in an increase of Cesarean deliveries. The likelihood of Cesarean delivery is about 35 percent for women older than 35 and 50 percent for those 40 and older.

Even noting these potential complications, most older mothers who plan their care before conception and during gestation will experience an uneventful pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby. Dr. Nancy F. Petit, an obstetrician at the North Wilmington Women's Center, offers the following advice: "I discuss with my patients the importance of preconception counseling. During this interview, I review any medical problems that could potentially complicate their pregnancy and establish a course of action to monitor these conditions. Of course, the elimination of tobacco, alcohol and any other unhealthy substances is discussed. I also recommend good nutrition, daily prenatal vitamins and the addition of 400 micrograms of folic acid. This should be taken up to a year before conception."

There is no reason for women older than 35 to shy away from pregnancy despite the special risks they may face due to their age. Be sure to discuss with your obstetrician your pregnancy plans so good preconception counseling can be provided and early testing and care may be initiated.

Dr. James J. Cosgrove is chairman of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington.

my husband and i were chatting last night and he told me he would really love it if we could meet some other parents in our area who have kids our daughters age or close to it. we have very few friends locally who have children and we feel it would really benefit us and our daughter to connect to come folks nearby. he suggested that i take the lead on this (i am definitely the more social of the two of us) and i was just wondering if any of you mamas have tried to reach out to people in your community (in the flesh) and if so, how you have done it. he suggested that i look for "mommy and me" groups but i have to admit that the idea of this kind of wierds me out. i have always been the kind of person that has found my friends through more organic means.

any suggestions would be totally appreciated! and if there are any mamas in the sf area who want to hook up for a walk or a cup of coffee or something, send me a pm!! our daughter is 7 months old but honestly, it would be great to meet parents with kids of any age.

thanks in advance!

I finished weaning my little guy about 5 or 6 days ago - after a grdually nursing less for the last few months.
My breasts are totally engorged and sore and feel like they are getting worse, not better, as the days go by.
How long will this last?!?
Do you mamas have any tips on making this suck (ha ha) less for me?

help with baby accessory project...

Do you have a few minutes? Do you have a: child/few children/baby on the way? What better way to celebrate than to take a survey?

I am working on a graduate study project involving baby accessories and the accessories you buy for them! Think strollers, and all the things you attach to them (drink holders, baskets, etc...) The project is for a design class that focuses on one aspect of children's needs.

The survey itself will take between 5 and 10 minutes. Responses will be viewed only by me, but the general results will be shared with my class of 8.

If you, or anyone you know, has/had/will have a child, please take a few minutes and fill out a quick questionaire. All responses are very much appreciated!

Bottle weaning...(xpost)

I would like to start weaning my baby boy from the bottle pretty soon, but am kind of clueless on how to do this. I dont think he's attached to the bottle, at least from what I can tell, so I dont think i'll have that much of a problem...but I have tried giving him his milk in a sippy cup before and he just tosses it aside. He's been on a bottle since birth, he wouldnt latch on so I was expressing my milk and giving it to him via bottle and he took well to it. I have stopped producing milk and he's on cows milk now, he's 14months old.
Does anyone have any good advice on how to do this? What worked for you, and what didnt work for you? How old were your kids when you decided to wean them off the bottle?

Moms! Starting a mom punk band!

Already have a great drummer and a singer who can play guitar (or bass or fiddle, but not all at the same time).
Punk, Old Timey Country, Ska, Glam and anything else that comes along. Except maybe freeform jazz. HipMama readers, coffee drinkers, lactivists and people who annoy the shit out of the PTA are welcome. Bio-moms, step-moms, queer moms, trans moms, chicks who can pass as moms...Make music, make a difference, get street cred with your kids' friends.
Attitude is more important than musical experience, but if you have both, then, great!
Originals and some (in)appropriate covers.
I'm in Oakland.....
